Safety Program

Policy Statement

Believing that safety is an essential part of all flight-training operations as well as a core business function, the Department of Aviation Management and Flight (AVMAF) at Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC) is committed to the implementation of a Safety Program that enables its management, employees, students and guests to operate in a safe environment.

Safety is everyone’s responsibility. Adherence to established operating rules and procedures, use of voluntary safety reporting systems, and knowledge of comprehensive emergency response procedures are essential aspects of a successful Aviation Safety Program.

AVMAF leadership will provide the necessary policy direction, resources, and environment to make this possible. AVMAF will monitor and measure progress towards specific safety targets as it strives for continuous improvement.

Safety Reporting / SIUC Flight Event Report Forms

The SIUC Aviation Flight program has established a safety reporting program similar to the Aviation Safety Reporting System (ASRS) conducted by NASA in conjunction with the FAA. The intention of this program is to identify operational errors (accidents, incidents, near misses, traffic conflicts, incursions and other operations which could have safety implications) which occur during flight training. With these reports the Safety Officer and the Safety Review Committee can take proactive measures to reduce and eliminate their continued occurrence.

Student Drug Testing Program

SIUC Aviation has implemented a student drug testing policy.  More information regarding the testing policy can be found here.

Safety Web Site

The purpose of this Safety Web Site is to inform instructors as well as students of safety issues within the Aviation Flight Program. This web site is updated continuously as circumstances warrant. The information presented in the web site will always be de-identified to promote the continued reporting of safety related occurrences and flight events in an effort to improve the safety of our flight training operation.
